Bathing Suits, Beach Towels and Americana Summer Dreamin’
Oh, hello, summer!
June. Summer. I know we’re (somehow) nearly halfway through June, but I’m still over here saying, “oh, hello, summer” ππΌ. I’m always like this … watching the months speed by, hurrying to catch up. π€·π»ββοΈ I don’t know how to change it.
I have been thinking a lot about summer though. About what I want it to look like this year. About romanticizing a season … about how that might actually be a good thing for me …
A good, wholesome, old-fashioned, nostalgic Americana summer. That’s what I want. And, that’s what I’m going to call it – an Americana summer. It’ll be my summer ‘theme’ of-sorts and I’ll use it to set the stage for all of it … from the clothes I wear, to the flowers I plant, to the food we eat. This year I want to reclaim summer in a way I haven’t been able to in the past few years. It’s tricker for our family – we are in a year round school district and “summer” isn’t what it was when I was a kid. My kids are only out of school (tracked out) for 4 weeks, so “summer” can’t be 3 long, lazy, hot months of no school. Those 4 July weeks zip by so quickly that, if we aren’t careful, it can feel like we miss the magic of it altogether. Too easily it can feel like nothing more than hot and yucky … almost a burden … and I wish it away.
Not this summer!
My babies are growing too fast and the summers are fleeting. Are the years of sprinklers and bubbles and sidewalk chalk already gone? Maybe? Yes, probably. But this year, school or no school, I’m determined to drag the magic back in.
An Americana summer. An Americana childhood summer.
One night after dinner, we (our family of 4) sat back down at the table and wrote out our “Americana Summer Bucket Lists”. The rules were simple – we had to keep it simple. ππ These lists were for the basics … things that felt summery to us … things we wanted to do to keep that summery mood alive. They ended up being surprisingly lengthy but they did (luckily) include a lot of overlap.
Some of the things that made our lists were — A picnic; Family walks after dinner; Homemade ice cream; Watermelon; Bike rides; Catching lightening bugs; Boat days; Corn on the cob; Pool days + dinner at the pool; Game nights on the porch; Mini-golf + Top Golf; New books; Learning pickleball + family tennis matches, and so on …
We’re attempting to ease into summer mode and summer moods, while still wrapping up the school year with EOGs and all of the EOY activities. We’ll get there.
In the meantime, the pool is open and we’re spending a lot more time in our bathing suits. And, that’s pretty summery – bathing suits and beach towels. ππ©³ ποΈ Which brings us to today’s round up! A round up of bathing suits and beach towels (for you and your fella) to help you dive head first into this Americana summer season with me!
